Caldas de Monchique has been renowned since the Roman times as a spa town, where the sulphur-rich warm spring water (it comes to the ground at 32 degrees) is so highly prized that it is bottled at the local source. The spa waters spiritual, restorative and healing qualities have attracted many illustrious visitors over the centuries, including the Kings of Portugal and Italy who came to the region in order to “take the waters”.
